Innovation Pulse

    Building Innovation Capability

A systems perspective on turning strategic intent into the ability to act. Map capability gaps, shape conditions for agency and use feedback to improve how people, processes and tools work together.

Pathway 03 · Building Innovation Capability

Leaders, capability owners and transformation practitioners responsible for translating ambition into repeatable organisational ability.

    KIN Capability Architecture

This pathway draws on KIN Capability Architecture, led by Deana. It focuses on the deliberate connection between strategic intent, organisational capability and the conditions that let people exercise agency. Its emphasis is designing and improving capability as a system, including feedback and human-AI collaboration. It is distinct from Christer Windeløv-Lidzélius's innovation and complexity domains and Liv Cardell's RM3 organisational lens.

    Curriculum in development

    Modules and intended outcomes

Each module connects a core idea to useful work in context. The curriculum and learner environment are being developed; these outlines describe the planned learning, not courses currently available to enrol in.

    4 modules in this pathway
    01

    Strategic Intent to Organisational Capability

Trace the connection from strategic ambition to the capabilities, roles and operating conditions needed to act. Make the chain of reasoning visible so capability building serves a clear organisational purpose.

    Intended outcome

Create a concise line of sight from a strategic intent to the capabilities and evidence that would demonstrate progress.

    02

    Capability Gaps

Compare the capability a strategy requires with what is currently available in practice. Combine structured diagnosis with evidence from work rather than treating a gap as a simple training deficit.

    Intended outcome

Prioritise a capability gap, support the diagnosis with evidence and identify whether the response needs learning, system or role changes.

    03

    Conditions for Agency

Examine how decision rights, information, resources and trust shape people's ability to act. Design conditions that give people room to contribute while keeping purpose, boundaries and accountability clear.

    Intended outcome

Specify one change to decision space or support that could increase agency, with a signal to evaluate its effect.

    04

    Human–AI Collaboration

Explore how human judgement and AI-enabled tools can complement one another in capability development and innovation work. Consider task fit, oversight, transparency and the limits of automation.

    Intended outcome

Describe a bounded human-AI use case, allocate responsibilities and name evidence needed to assess its usefulness and risks.

The module sequence and learning environment are under development. ISO 56000 provides a standards backbone across all three Academy pathways; it is not certification of this pathway or its learners.

    Learning in context

Build capability where strategy meets work

The learning environment is being developed to help learners work with a real strategic priority and trace it into capability requirements, enabling conditions and feedback. The aim is to make capability development observable in practice, not just documented as an aspiration.

    Pathway questions

    Who leads KIN Capability Architecture?

KIN Capability Architecture is led by Deana. It provides this pathway's basis for connecting strategic intent to organisational capability, agency and improvement.

How is this different from the RM3 pathway?

The capability pathway focuses on designing and improving the organisational ability required by strategy. RM3, Liv Cardell's Red Matters 3-ology, is a separate lens for reading Structure, Culture and Development. Both can be useful, but they are not interchangeable.

Are these modules available to enrol in?

Not yet. The modules and learning environment are being developed. The listed outcomes describe the intended learning architecture rather than a live course.

Does ISO 56000 certify this Academy pathway?

No. ISO 56000 is the shared standards backbone across the Academy pathways. It informs common innovation management language and principles, but it is not certification of a pathway or learner.
